Newborns are at risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The material chosen to dress a newborn with can increase the risk of SIDS. Baby blankets are usually lightweight; they can be used to wrap, swaddle, or cover a baby. Baby blankets can become hazardous when used wrongly.
How Can Blankets be Hazardous?
- If blankets are left loose in a crib, it can be a suffocation hazard
- Wrapping blankets around a baby’s head or neck can cause suffocation.
- Swaddling a baby when he starts rolling over
Preventive Measures
- Never cover the baby with a blanket in the first year of their life
- Use wearable blankets for the baby
- Do not place an extra blanket around the baby. Avoid using crib bumpers or any other loose bedding while baby is in the crib
